Top Amenities and Things to Do Near River Strand
One of the biggest reasons buyers choose River Strand isn’t just the homes—it’s what comes with them. Between the on-site resort amenities and the shopping, dining, parks, and beaches within a short drive, there’s a lot to unpack. This guide covers everything from the 27-hole golf course inside the gates to the nature preserves and beach towns that are a quick drive away.
I’m John Belt, a Bradenton-area real estate agent who knows this corner of Manatee County inside and out. Here’s what life looks like when you live in River Strand.
The 27-Hole Golf Course
The centerpiece amenity. River Strand’s Arthur Hills–designed course features three nine-hole layouts—Estuary, Sanctuary, and Tributary—that rotate in three different 18-hole combinations. The longest combination (Estuary + Sanctuary) plays about 7,113 yards from the gold tees.
The course underwent a $5.8 million renovation from 2021 to 2023 by architect Andrew Green, including new Bimini Bermuda fairways, reestablished TifEagle greens, Better Billy Bunkers, and a rebuilt aqua driving range with 25 tee positions where you hit balls into water. There’s also a practice chipping area with bunkers and a putting green.
For golf-deeded homeowners (1,299 of River Strand’s roughly 1,870 homes), greens fees are included with ownership. Cart fees still apply.
Pools, Fitness, and Spa
River Strand has nine pools total. Two resort-style heated pools anchor the clubhouse and community center. A resistance pool is available for lap swimmers and aquatic exercise. Six satellite heated pools are scattered throughout the neighborhoods so you’re never more than a short walk from a swim.
The 3,500-square-foot fitness spa at the clubhouse offers personal training, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and water aerobics classes. A second fitness center at the community center provides additional equipment. Both are included with your membership—no extra gym fees.
Tennis and Pickleball
River Strand has nine lighted Har-Tru clay tennis courts and eight dedicated pickleball courts (including one at The Sanctuary). The tennis and pickleball program includes a pro shop, teaching pros, leagues, clinics, and tournaments. Both sports have active year-round communities, though the winter season (when snowbirds return) is when play is busiest.
The Clubhouse and Dining
The 39,000-square-foot Tuscan-inspired clubhouse recently underwent an $8.5 million renovation. It features a cascading rock waterfall entry and sits between the 18th and 27th greens. Inside, you’ll find four dining venues: a formal dining room for special occasions, the Grille Room for casual meals, a sports bar for watching games, and the Tiki Bar poolside for drinks and lighter fare.
The clubhouse also houses a billiards room, locker rooms, and event spaces. Between the dining options and the poolside Tiki Bar, most residents find they eat at the club regularly.
Social Events and Community Life
A full-time activities director plans the social calendar. Regular events include trivia nights, wine tastings, holiday parties, pool parties, live entertainment, and group tours to off-site destinations. Bridge, mahjong, and bingo groups meet weekly. Half-court basketball is available for more active residents.
The social calendar is one of River Strand’s strongest selling points—especially for retirees and active adults who want built-in social connections without having to seek them out. If you’re coming from out of state, the community structure makes it easy to meet people quickly.
Shopping and Dining Near River Strand
The immediate surroundings are stacked with retail and restaurants.
Less than 1 mile: The Marketplace at Heritage Harbour is a 500,000+ square-foot shopping center anchored by Costco (155,000 sq ft) and Target (148,000 sq ft). Academy Sports + Outdoors, Hobby Lobby, and Crunch Fitness are here too. A Whole Foods Market is coming soon.
Dining within 1–5 miles: The Landing at Heritage Harbour includes Panera Bread, Seasons 52, Smoothie King, and upcoming spots like Mister O1 Pizza and Fresh Kitchen. Miller’s Ale House is about 1.2 miles east on SR-64. LongHorn Steakhouse and CAVA are in the Heritage Harbour commercial area.
Shopping destinations: Ellenton Premium Outlets (130+ outlet stores) is about 5–7 miles north via I-75, roughly 8–15 minutes. UTC Mall (Nordstrom, Macy’s, Apple Store) is 10–15 miles south, about 15–20 minutes. Lakewood Ranch’s Waterside Place and Main Street are 5–8 miles south for boutique shopping, lakefront dining, and Florida’s #1-ranked farmers’ market.
Parks and Nature Preserves
Heritage Harbour Park (less than 1 mile): 99.3 acres with disc golf, a 2.5-mile path around Beacon Lake, and a dog park. This is your neighborhood park—no driving required.
Robinson Preserve (about 15 miles west): 682 acres of coastal habitat with 13+ miles of trails, a 40-foot observation tower, kayak trails, and some of the best bird-watching on the Gulf Coast. Free admission.
Emerson Point Preserve (about 15–18 miles northwest): Kayak launches, hiking trails, and a historic archaeological site at the tip of the Snead Island peninsula. Incredible sunset views over Tampa Bay.
Lake Manatee State Park (about 15 miles east on SR-64): Swimming, camping, boat ramps, and freshwater fishing. A great day trip right along the corridor you already drive.
Boating and Water Access
River Strand borders the Manatee River, and 12 homes in The Moorings have private docks. For everyone else, Fort Hamer Park (about 4 miles south) has a paved public boat ramp on the Manatee River. Jiggs Landing (about 6–8 miles south) offers a free ramp plus kayak and boat rentals. Both put you on the river with access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf.
Beaches
Anna Maria Island and Holmes Beach are about 17 miles west—roughly a 30–35-minute drive. Longboat Key is 18–20 miles. Siesta Key in Sarasota is about 25–30 miles south. None of these require highway driving once you reach the coast road, and the drive is part of the charm—you cross the Manatee River and wind through some of Florida’s most scenic waterfront corridors.
Nearby Healthcare
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is about 6–8 miles south. Blake Medical Center is roughly 10 miles west in downtown Bradenton. Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s main campus is about 15–20 miles south. For day-to-day medical needs, there are urgent care clinics and physician offices scattered along SR-64 and in the Lakewood Ranch area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are River Strand amenities included in the HOA fees?
Yes. Access to the pools, fitness centers, tennis courts, pickleball courts, clubhouse dining, and social events is included with your membership (either golf or social, depending on which section you buy in). The 27-hole golf course is included only for golf-deeded homeowners. There may be an annual food and beverage minimum that applies to all members.
What is there to do near River Strand without a car?
Within River Strand itself, you can golf, swim, play tennis or pickleball, work out, dine at four on-site venues, and attend social events—all walkable or accessible by golf cart. Heritage Harbour Park is also accessible without a car for walking, disc golf, and dog walking. For shopping and dining, Costco and Target are technically less than a mile but most residents drive.
How far is River Strand from Lakewood Ranch?
Lakewood Ranch Main Street is about 6–8 miles south of River Strand, roughly a 10–15-minute drive. Waterside Place at Lakewood Ranch is about 5–6 miles south. UTC Mall is 10–15 miles. Despite the proximity, River Strand is in the City of Bradenton, not Lakewood Ranch—a distinction that affects property taxes and school zones.
Is there a marina or boat dock at River Strand?
There is no community marina, but 12 homes in The Moorings section have private boat docks on the Manatee River. Public boat ramps are nearby at Fort Hamer Park (4 miles south) and Jiggs Landing (6–8 miles south), both providing river access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Can non-residents use River Strand’s golf course?
No. River Strand’s 27-hole Arthur Hills golf course is private and bundled—only homeowners with golf-deeded properties (and their guests) can play. There are no public tee times and no standalone memberships available. If you want to play golf in the area without buying, Heritage Harbour Golf Club (Stoneybrook’s 18-hole public course) is the closest alternative.
