Shopping in and Around Lakewood Ranch: UTC Mall and Beyond

Lakewood Ranch itself is not a shopping destination — it's a residential community. But the shopping infrastructure surrounding it is strong, anchored by one of the best malls on Florida's Gulf Coast and supplemented by specialty retail at the community's two town centers. Here's the full picture.

The Mall at University Town Center

The Mall at University Town Center — UTC — sits at the intersection of I-75 and University Parkway, about 10 minutes south of most Lakewood Ranch neighborhoods. It's a Simon-owned property with over 150 stores and restaurants, anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, and Dillard's. The retail mix includes Sephora, Lululemon, Apple, Pottery Barn, and Williams-Sonoma alongside fashion, jewelry, and lifestyle brands.

Dining at UTC goes well beyond the typical food court. The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, The Cheesecake Factory, and Brio Tuscan Grille all operate full-service restaurants within the mall complex. It's the kind of shopping center that functions as a full afternoon or evening destination rather than a quick errand.

Main Street at Lakewood Ranch

Main Street's retail leans toward boutiques, specialty shops, and locally owned businesses. You'll find women's fashion, home décor, jewelry, gifts, and specialty food items. The experience is curated and walkable — the opposite of a big-box shopping trip. It's better for browsing, gifts, and supporting local businesses than for checking off a long shopping list.

Waterside Place

Waterside Place is adding retail as the district fills in, with a mix of convenience-oriented shops and specialty businesses. The emphasis is on services and daily needs rather than destination shopping. Combined with the restaurants and farmers market, it serves as a neighborhood commercial hub for the eastern Lakewood Ranch villages.

University Parkway Corridor

University Parkway between I-75 and Lorraine Road has developed into a conventional retail corridor with grocery stores (Publix, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's), Target, Home Depot, and other national chains. This is where most residents handle their everyday shopping. The corridor is convenient to virtually all Lakewood Ranch neighborhoods and continues to add stores and restaurants as the population grows.

What's Missing

Lakewood Ranch doesn't have a Costco or IKEA — the nearest Costco is in Sarasota, about 20 minutes south. For specialty or luxury shopping beyond UTC, downtown Sarasota's St. Armands Circle is 30 minutes west and offers a walkable collection of upscale boutiques and galleries.
