My Safe Florida Home Program: Get Up to $10,000 for Hurricane-Proofing

Hurricane season is a reality of life in Florida, and protecting your home against wind damage is both a safety priority and a financial one. The My Safe Florida Home program is a state-funded grant initiative that provides eligible homeowners with up to $10,000 to strengthen their homes against hurricanes — at no cost or significantly reduced cost to the homeowner.

If you own a home in Manatee County, Sarasota County, or anywhere in Florida, this program could help you harden your home against storms while simultaneously lowering your insurance premiums. Here's everything you need to know about qualifying, applying, and making the most of this opportunity in 2026.

What Is the My Safe Florida Home Program?

My Safe Florida Home is a program administered by the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Originally launched in 2006, it was re-funded and expanded by the Florida Legislature in recent years as part of broader efforts to make homeownership more affordable by reducing insurance costs.

The program has two components:

Free wind inspections: Eligible homeowners can receive a free home wind inspection conducted by a certified inspector. This inspection identifies specific improvements that would make your home more resistant to hurricane damage. The inspection report details exactly which upgrades would qualify for the grant.

Matching grants up to $10,000: Based on the inspection results, homeowners can apply for grant funding to cover eligible improvements. The program operates on a matching basis — the state covers a significant portion of the cost, and the homeowner pays the remainder. For homes with an insured value under $500,000, the match rate can cover the majority of improvement costs.

Who Qualifies for the My Safe Florida Home Grant?

To be eligible for the My Safe Florida Home program, you must meet several requirements:

Your home must be a site-built, single-family detached residence. Condominiums, townhomes, mobile homes, and manufactured homes are not eligible. The home must have a homestead exemption, meaning it must be your primary residence. Your home's insured value must fall within the program's limits — check the current year's thresholds on the My Safe Florida Home website for the most up-to-date figures.

The home must have been built before 2008, as homes constructed after that year were already built to the stricter Florida Building Code standards that the program's improvements are designed to achieve. You must also have an active homeowners insurance policy on the property.

Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so applying early in the program cycle gives you the best chance of receiving a grant.

What Improvements Does the Program Cover?

The grant funds can be used for specific wind-hardening improvements identified in your free inspection report. Eligible improvements typically include:

Roof improvements: Upgrading roof deck attachment with closer nail spacing, adding secondary water resistance barriers, and replacing non-compliant roof coverings with FBC-rated materials.

Opening protection: Installing impact-rated windows and doors, reinforcing garage doors to meet wind code requirements, and adding hurricane shutters to protect glass openings.

Roof-to-wall connections: Adding hurricane straps or clips to strengthen the connection between your roof structure and wall framing — one of the most critical wind resistance features.

Exterior door reinforcement: Upgrading entry doors and sliding glass doors to meet impact resistance standards.

All improvements must be completed by licensed, insured contractors, and the work must be permitted and inspected by your local building department.

How to Apply for My Safe Florida Home

Step 1 — Check eligibility and apply online: Visit the official My Safe Florida Home website to confirm your eligibility and submit your application. You'll need basic information about your home, your homestead exemption status, and your insurance policy.

Step 2 — Schedule your free wind inspection: Once approved, you'll be matched with a certified inspector who will assess your home and identify eligible improvements. This inspection is provided at no cost to you.

Step 3 — Review your inspection report: The inspector's report will list specific improvements recommended for your home, along with estimated costs and the projected insurance savings each improvement could generate.

Step 4 — Select a contractor and get estimates: Obtain quotes from licensed contractors for the improvements you want to make. The program may have an approved contractor list or requirements for contractor qualifications.

Step 5 — Complete improvements and submit documentation: After the work is completed, submit your paid invoices, permit documentation, and final inspection reports to receive your grant reimbursement.

The Insurance Savings Add Up

Beyond the grant itself, the real long-term value of My Safe Florida Home lies in the insurance savings. Every improvement you make through the program should qualify for insurance premium credits through a wind mitigation inspection. A home that receives a full suite of upgrades — secondary water resistance, hurricane straps, impact-rated openings — can see annual insurance savings of $1,000 to $3,000 or more.

Over a 10-year period, those savings can total $10,000 to $30,000 — in addition to the grant funding you received to make the improvements. And your home's resale value increases because buyers specifically look for hurricane-hardened homes with documented wind mitigation features.

Take Action Before Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and demand for contractors surges as storms approach. The best time to apply for My Safe Florida Home and schedule your improvements is during the off-season — January through May — when contractors have more availability and the program is less likely to have exhausted its funding.
