Boating from Venice: Jettied Inlet, Multiple Marinas, and ICW Canal Living

Venice sits on an island created when the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway was excavated in the 1960s, giving it ICW frontage on both sides plus Gulf access through Venice Inlet. Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From Venice Island, expect approximately 10 to 20 minutes to clear Venice Inlet and reach the open Gulf, depending on your starting point. From South Venice canal communities, add 5 to 10 minutes. There are no locks or lifts.

Bridges and Clearances

Heading south through the ICW toward Venice Inlet, you may encounter these bridges depending on your starting point:

Venice Avenue Bridge (Colonel George Kumpe Bridge) — Bascule drawbridge at ICW Mile 56.6 with 30 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet horizontal. Weekday schedule openings at the hour, 20 past, and 40 past from 7 AM to 4:30 PM. Opens on signal at other times.

Circus Bridge (US 41 Business / Tamiami Trail) — Twin bascule spans at ICW Mile 54.9 with 25 feet of clearance when closed, the lowest bridge on the Venice route. Horizontal clearance is 90 feet at center span. Opens on signal.

Hatchett Creek / KMI Bridge (US 41) — Bascule drawbridge south of Venice Island with 30 feet of clearance when closed and 100 feet horizontal.

Two fixed-span bridges above Venice Avenue Bridge have clearances of 75 to 76 feet and are not a factor for recreational boats.

Channel Depths

Venice Inlet has a federal authorized channel depth of 7 feet MLLW in the jettied inlet and 9 feet MLLW in the adjacent ICW. Mid-line depths through the jettied inlet are reported at 7 feet or better. Off-channel flats can drop to 2.5 feet at low water. Hurricane-related shoaling has affected some areas, so verify current conditions.

Marina Park at 301 East Venice Avenue in Venice. Two-lane ramp with courtesy docks, approximately 40 trailer spaces, restrooms, open 6 AM to 10 PM.

Higel Marine Park at 1330 Tarpon Center Drive in Venice. Double-lane ramp, the closest ramp to Venice Inlet.

Crow's Nest Marina at 1968 Tarpon Center Drive in Venice offers gasoline and diesel with a fuel dock open 6:30 AM to 5 PM. They accommodate boats up to 140 feet and are also a well-known waterfront restaurant. VHF Channel 72.
