Boating from Siesta Key: Canal Living, Gulf Access, and What Draft-Conscious Buyers Need to Know

Siesta Key is known for its world-famous beach, but for boaters, the real draw is the roughly 9 to 10 miles of interconnected man-made canals threading through Siesta Isles and Palm Island. Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From the Grand Canal system, expect approximately 15 to 25 minutes to reach the open Gulf via Roberts Bay and Big Sarasota Pass, depending on your starting point and conditions. There are no locks or lifts anywhere on the route.

Bridges and Clearances

Siesta Drive Bridge (North Bridge, SR 758) — Bascule drawbridge with 25 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Opens on the hour and half hour from 6 AM to 7 PM. Located at ICW Mile 71.6.

Stickney Point Bridge (South Bridge, SR 72) — Bascule drawbridge with 18 feet of clearance when closed (21 feet at center span) and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Opens on demand 24/7. Located at ICW Mile 68.6.

If departing from the Grand Canal area and heading directly to Big Sarasota Pass without crossing under the ICW bridges, neither bridge is required on your route.

Channel Depths

Big Sarasota Pass is not federally maintained and shifts constantly. A 2026 Sarasota Yacht Club survey found a control depth of approximately 6 feet at mean low water. A January 2020 survey showed depths as low as 4.9 feet near maximum low tide. Navigation aids have been partially or entirely removed from the pass, so local knowledge is essential. Canal depths in Siesta Isles vary, with some branches carrying 3 to 5 feet at low tide. The ICW channel carries a minimum of 6 to 7 feet in marked sections.

Closest Public Boat Ramp

Turtle Beach Park Boat Ramp at 8918 Midnight Pass Road on the south end of Siesta Key is the primary public launch. It provides direct access to Little Sarasota Bay and the ICW.

Safe Harbor Siesta Key at 1265 Old Stickney Point Road offers gasoline and diesel.

Popular activities include fishing for snook, redfish, and tarpon, sunset cruises through the bay, and sandbar runs to the barrier island beaches.

The key consideration for Siesta Key boaters is draft. Big Sarasota Pass is shallow and unmarked, and canal depths vary. Boaters with vessels drawing more than 3 feet should carefully evaluate tide windows and canal depths before committing to a specific property. That said, for boats that fit the water, Siesta Key offers one of the most desirable canal boating lifestyles on Florida's Gulf Coast.
