Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From Sarasota Bay mainland docks, expect approximately 20 to 30 minutes at moderate cruising speed to reach the open Gulf. You have multiple route options: south through Big Sarasota Pass under the 65-foot fixed Ringling Causeway Bridge (best for sailboats, no drawbridge wait), north through New Pass under the Ringling Bridge plus the New Pass drawbridge, or a longer route north to Longboat Pass. There are no locks or lifts on any route.

Bridges and Clearances

John Ringling Causeway Bridge (SR 789) — Fixed span with 65 feet of clearance and 100 feet horizontal. No opening needed. This is on every route from the mainland bay neighborhoods.

New Pass Bascule Bridge — 23 feet closed clearance, 90 feet horizontal. Opens on the hour, at 20 past, and at 40 past from 7 AM to 6 PM.

Longboat Pass Bridge — 17 feet closed clearance, 45 feet horizontal. Opens on demand 24/7.

Channel Depths

Sarasota Bay open water averages approximately 6 to 7 feet. The ICW maintained channel is authorized at 9 feet with 2 feet of overdepth, giving 11 feet MLLW per the USACE Jacksonville District. Outside the marked channels, areas can drop to 2 to 3 feet at low tide near mangrove shorelines. New Pass carries 4 to 7 feet depending on dredging status. Big Sarasota Pass carries approximately 6 to 7 feet but shifts constantly.
