Perico Island sits between the Bradenton mainland and Anna Maria Island, surrounded by Perico Bay and Anna Maria Sound. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway runs along its western side. While often overlooked in favor of the barrier islands, Perico offers boaters a strategic central location with fuel, dry storage, and marina services right on the island. Here is what you need to know about boating from Perico.

Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From Perico Island, expect approximately 10 to 15 minutes via Longboat Pass at a moderate cruising speed of 15 to 20 knots. The route covers roughly 3 to 4 nautical miles south through Anna Maria Sound. You can also head north via Tampa Bay and Passage Key Inlet in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. There are no locks or lifts on any route.

Bridges and Clearances

Anna Maria Island Bridge (SR 64 / Manatee Avenue) — Bascule drawbridge with 24 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Opens on the quarter-hour and three-quarter-hour from 6 AM to 7 PM. VHF Channel 09. FDOT is designing a 65-foot fixed replacement bridge with a construction letting date projected for July 2028.

Cortez Bridge (SR 684) — Bascule drawbridge with 22 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Also being replaced with a 65-foot fixed span.

Heading south toward Longboat Pass, you would pass under the Cortez Bridge. Heading north, the Anna Maria Island Bridge. Both open on demand for taller vessels.

Channel Depths

The ICW channel near the bridges carries 8 to 16 feet. The federal project depth for the ICW is 9 feet at mean low water, though actual conditions may be shallower between dredging cycles. Marina approach depths near the Cortez Bridge have been reported at 6 feet. Perico Bayou and residential canal depths are not officially surveyed, so boaters with deeper-draft vessels should investigate conditions before purchasing canal-front property.

Closest Public Boat Ramp

Palma Sola Causeway Boat Ramp at 9500 Manatee Avenue in Bradenton is the nearest public ramp, with a single lane, non-floating courtesy dock, and parking for 17 trailers. The ramp is tidal, so check tide charts before launching. The Kingfish Boat Ramp at 752 Manatee Avenue in Holmes Beach offers multiple lanes and 50 trailer spots.

Fuel and Repairs

Safe Harbor Pier 77 at 12312 Manatee Avenue West is located directly on Perico Island on Anna Maria Sound. They offer ValvTect marine gas (ethanol-free, 90 octane) and ValvTect marine diesel, open daily 8 AM to 5 PM. The marina provides wet slips for boats 21 to 45 feet and dry storage for boats 20 to 40 feet in a hurricane-rated building.

For repairs, Bradenton Beach Marina approximately 3 miles south on Anna Maria Island has a 77-ton Marine Travelift, inboard and outboard mechanical repair, fiberglass and gelcoat work, and electrical and plumbing services.

The Boating Lifestyle

Perico Island offers a mainland-adjacent boating location with the ICW right at your doorstep. Gulf access via Longboat Pass to the south or Tampa Bay to the north means no locks, no lifts, and only one drawbridge in either direction. The shallow tidal flats surrounding the island demand tide awareness, particularly when launching from the causeway ramps. Safe Harbor Pier 77 provides fuel, dry storage, and wet slips right on the island, making Perico a convenient home base for boaters who want marina amenities without barrier island prices.
