Boating from Palma Sola Bay: Gulf Access, Bridge Clearances, and What Boaters Need to Know

Palma Sola Bay is one of the most underrated boating destinations in Manatee County. Covering roughly 3,200 acres of shallow saltwater flats on the northwest side of Bradenton, this bay attracts boaters who value quiet water, exceptional inshore fishing, and a nature-forward experience over marina-and-cruise culture. Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From Palma Sola Bay, expect a 20 to 30 minute boat ride to reach open Gulf waters. There is no direct channel from the bay to the Gulf. Instead, you will transit south through Anna Maria Sound to Longboat Pass, or head north through Tampa Bay via Passage Key Inlet. There are no locks or lifts anywhere on these routes.

Bridges and Clearances

Heading south from Palma Sola Bay, you will pass under two bridges:

Anna Maria Island Bridge (SR 64 / Manatee Avenue) — Bascule drawbridge with 24 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. The bridge opens on the quarter-hour and three-quarter-hour from 6 AM to 7 PM, and on signal at all other times. Monitor VHF Channel 09. Note: FDOT has plans for a 65-foot fixed replacement bridge, with construction forecast around 2028-2029.

Cortez Bridge (SR 684) — Bascule drawbridge with 22 feet of clearance when closed and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Same opening schedule as the Anna Maria Island Bridge. This bridge is being replaced with a 65-foot fixed span, with construction expected to begin in September 2026.

Channel Depths

Palma Sola Bay itself is predominantly 4 to 8 feet deep, but large portions of the grass flats drop to 2 to 4 feet at mean low water, with some areas under 1 foot. There is no federally maintained channel running through the bay, so local knowledge of the flats is essential. Once you reach Anna Maria Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) has a federal project depth of 9 feet at mean low water, though actual depths may be shallower between dredging cycles. Always consult current NOAA charts and tide tables before navigating unfamiliar areas.

Closest Public Boat Ramp

Palma Sola Causeway Boat Ramp — Located at 9500 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton, FL 34209. This single-lane ramp launches directly into Palma Sola Bay. The facility has parking for approximately 17 vehicles with trailers. The ramp is tidal, so check conditions before launching at low tide.

Fuel and Repairs

There is no marina with a fuel dock directly on Palma Sola Bay. The nearest fuel is at Twin Dolphin Marina at 1000 1st Avenue West in downtown Bradenton on the Manatee River, which offers ValvTect non-ethanol gasoline and diesel. For boat repairs, MarineMax Bradenton on the Manatee River provides factory-authorized service with dry storage for over 340 boats.

The Boating Lifestyle

Palma Sola Bay is a fishing-first destination. Target species include spotted seatrout, snook, and redfish year-round, with tarpon, pompano, and sharks moving through seasonally.
