Boating from Nokomis and North Jetty: Venice Inlet Access and Old Florida Fishing Culture

Nokomis and the North Jetty area sit right at Venice Inlet, where the ICW meets the Gulf of Mexico through a permanently stabilized, jettied channel. For boaters, this means reliable Gulf access with a maintained inlet and multiple free public boat ramps. Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From North Jetty Park, you are essentially at the Gulf the moment you clear the jetty rocks. From the Nokomis Boat Ramp on the ICW north of the Albee Road Bridge, expect approximately 20 minutes at 6 knots to clear Venice Inlet. There are no locks or lifts.

Bridges and Clearances

Albee Road Bridge — The only bridge between Nokomis and the Gulf. Bascule drawbridge with a charted clearance of 14 feet when closed. Opens on demand. If heading south from the ramp, no bridges at all stand between you and the inlet.

Venice Inlet Details

Venice Inlet is federally engineered and permanently stabilized with two rock jetties built in 1936 and 1937. The jetties are approximately 300 feet apart with a 100-foot-wide channel. The federal authorized depth is 7 feet MLLW for the inlet channel and 9 feet MLLW for the adjacent ICW. Mid-line depths are reported at 7 feet or better.

Important: Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton all affected this coastline. A USCG Local Notice to Mariners noted shoaling to 4 feet near Daybeacon 42 on the ICW. Current conditions should be verified before relying on charted depths.

Closest Public Boat Ramps

Higel Marine Park at 1330 Tarpon Center Drive in Venice. Double ramp with approximately 40 trailer spaces, restrooms, and open 6 AM to 10 PM. Described as the closest boat ramp to Venice Inlet.

North Jetty Park at 1000 South Casey Key Road in Nokomis. Single lane, 37 trailer spaces, right at the jetty.

Nokomis Beach Park at 100 Casey Key Road in Nokomis. Two lanes, ICW access near Venice Inlet.

Fuel and Repairs

Gulf Harbor Marina at 100 Circuit Road in Nokomis offers gasoline and diesel directly on the ICW. Crow's Nest Marina at 1968 Tarpon Center Drive in Venice also sells gas, and is one of the area's best-known waterfront restaurants.

For repairs, Coastal Marine Center at 350 Buena Vista Drive in Nokomis is a Mercury-certified full-service facility.

The Boating Lifestyle

The Nokomis and North Jetty area is an Old Florida fishing community with a boating culture centered on Venice Inlet. The North Jetty Fish Camp, built in 1946, is a landmark right at the inlet. Snake Island is a popular sandbar raft-up destination reachable in about 25 minutes. The jetties produce exceptional snook fishing on the outgoing tide, with redfish and seatrout on the bay flats.
