Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From bay-side docks on Lido Key, expect approximately 5 to 15 minutes to reach the open Gulf through either New Pass to the north or Big Sarasota Pass to the south. Gulf-front properties have the Gulf at their doorstep. There are no locks or lifts.

Bridges and Clearances

Ringling Causeway Bridge — Fixed span with 65 feet of clearance. Connects the mainland to St. Armands and Lido Key. No opening needed.

New Pass Bascule Bridge — Bascule drawbridge with 23 feet of clearance when closed (approximately 21 feet at high tide) and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Opens on the hour, at 20 past, and at 40 past from 7 AM to 6 PM.

Big Sarasota Pass to the south has no bridge at all, providing an open-water route to the Gulf.

Channel Depths

New Pass is the primary Gulf access point for Lido Key boaters. Prior to the 2026 dredging project, the controlling depth was cited at approximately 4.5 feet. Post-dredge, portions have been improved to 13.5 feet, but shoaling has already been observed. Channel markers have been restored after an 8-year absence. The area directly under the New Pass drawbridge was not dredged due to a subsurface gas line and may carry as little as 5 feet at low tide.

Big Sarasota Pass has a historical depth of approximately 7 feet at mean low water but is subject to unpredictable shoaling with no maintained channel or reliable navigation aids.

Closest Public Boat Ramp

Ken Thompson Park Boat Ramp at 1700 Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota is located on City Island on the bay side, directly adjacent to Lido Key. Ted Sperling Park at South Lido offers a kayak and canoe launch only.
