Getting to the Gulf of Mexico

From Bird Key, expect under 10 minutes at cruising speed to reach open Gulf water. Multiple real estate and boating sources confirm this timeline. Boaters refer to the Bird Key "5-Minute Rule": 5 minutes east to downtown Sarasota, 5 minutes west to Lido Beach and St. Armands. There are no locks or lifts.

Bridges and Clearances

John Ringling Causeway Bridge (SR 789) — Fixed span with 65 feet of clearance (approximately 63 feet at high tide) and 100 feet of horizontal clearance. No opening needed. This generous fixed clearance means most sailboats and powerboats pass without any wait.

New Pass Bascule Bridge (between Lido Key and Longboat Key) — If heading to the Gulf via New Pass, this bascule drawbridge has 23 feet of clearance when closed (approximately 21 feet at high tide) and 90 feet of horizontal clearance. Opens on the hour, at 20 past, and at 40 past from 7 AM to 6 PM. Requires 3-hour advance notice for openings between 6 PM and 7 AM.

You can also reach the Gulf via Big Sarasota Pass to the south, which has no bridge at all.

Channel Depths

Bird Key canals are described as deep-water by multiple sources. The Bird Key Yacht Club has an approach depth of 12 feet and dockside depth of 8 feet. Bayfront estates accommodate larger yachts, sailboat canals handle 50-foot-plus cruisers, and garden canals serve smaller boats. Via New Pass, the area directly under the drawbridge was not dredged during the 2026 project due to a gas line beneath it, and boaters have reported depths as low as 5 feet at low tide in that spot. East of the bridge carries 10 feet post-dredge, and west of the bridge carries 13 feet.

Closest Public Boat Ramp

Centennial Park Boat Ramp at 1059 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota is the nearest public launch, with three double-lane ramps and approximately 70 trailer parking spaces.

Fuel and Repairs

Marina Jack at 2 Marina Plaza in downtown Sarasota offers high-flow diesel and 90-octane gasoline. The fuel dock is available 24/7 via self-serve with a credit card, and is staffed from 8 AM to 5 PM. Bird Key Yacht Club also has fuel, but it is for members and reciprocal yacht club members only.

For repairs, Sara Bay Marina at 7040 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota is warranty-authorized for MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, Evinrude, Yamaha, Mercury, and Honda.
